Marketing your blog just right

Posted at 3:15 pm under Blogging

I’ve been penalized by Google, or rather my directory has been penalized. With the directory the whole domain name has been penalized including this blog.
About 40% of traffic got lost, but it also shows me that I can survive without Google.
Why?
Because of incoming links providing traffic.
You can go ahead and submit to blog directories like Bloglines and based on your keywords and text in the description you can get traffic.
But the best way to get traffic and readership is to hang where the right traffic already is.
That’s mainly on web forums, other related blogs and to some extent social networking sites like Netscape.
Why Netscape?
Because you can rank your submissions easily and get traffic to your link from there. The problem is that the link to your site is very small, but you will still get traffic and exposure, especially when you use a username with the same name like your site.

You should comment in forums and have your blog in your signature or latest blog feed.
People will want to read more if your comments are good.
Same goes with comments on other blogs.

More to come …

Do you know why you were penalized? The key to getting good Google traffic is to get large traffic from sites other than Google. Google kicks in after your a hit.

As I have stated here and on Danny’s Blog I highly suspect it being Google employees going thru the Digitalpoint directories category randomly hitting about 55 directories which get heavily promoted there. It’s not a coincidence every directory in my signature got penalized and Danny himself mentioning the DP directory forums. I’ve just noticed that one of the penalized web directories is still on page 10 for the term “web directory”, so this penalty is more of a warning than something done to completely take those directories down.

My guess is that they just wanted to discourage more and more people from building new and meaningless directories and creating an even bigger clutter of webspace confusing and altering Google results even more.

I have to say that I think it’s not a bad idea for them to do this. But I do believe that many of the directories chosen should have never been chosen. There are many more meaningless ones, but those that were picked are the heaviest promoted ones and were chosen to send a stronger message.

I agree with you that you should focus on getting real links. Links with traffic. You can then see how the rankings are really given to those who are strong without Google.

Pretend Google doesn’t exist and find good places to get your site seen.

    Mike
