Its true that link exchange is going popular now a days and most people are exchanging either reciprocal or three way link. I am always against link exchange either reciprocal or three way because in my 7 years on seo experience i have always notice that why should we share our link juice with other.
We have done so much hardwork to get PR and give it out just to get relevant reciprocal link. No way

Simple: Because it can benefit you. You may not want to benefit a competitor by linking to him, but looking at the bigger picture, there is so much search engine traffic to go around, it might be better to benefit a few and take them up there with you than being on page 10 while others are getting the traffic you could be getting.
